Soak Up the Sun? Vitamin D Deficiency Linked to Alzheimer’s and Other Recent Health News (Stroke, Chocolate, Exercise…)

Vitamin D from Sun The journal Neurology recently published compelling research showing a strong association between low Vitamin D Levels and the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. The study, led by Dr. David Llewellyn at the University of Exeter Medical School, found that study participants who were severely deficient in Vitamin D were more than twice as likely to develop dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. According to a press release, the team discovered that:
  • Adults in the study who were moderately deficient in vitamin D had a 53 per cent increased risk of developing dementia of any kind.
  • And, the risk increased to 125 per cent in those who were severely deficient.
You can boost your Vitamin D levels through:
  • Exposure to sunlight
  • Consuming oily fish
  • Supplements
However, it is not yet clear whether or not actually boosting your Vitamin D levels will help you to ward off the disease. And, there may or may not be downsides to each of these methods of boosting Vitamin D. If this research interests you, you might consult with your physician.
